How this PIN code finder works

The tool searches a bundled copy of the official All India Pincode Directory published by the Department of Posts. Nothing is sent to a server: your browser downloads only the small slice of the directory it needs (PIN codes are grouped by their first two digits, and name searches load one state at a time), so lookups are instant even on slow mobile connections.

Three search modes cover the common cases. If you have a PIN and want to know which offices and areas it covers, use By PIN code. If you know the area but not the PIN, use By place name with the state selected. To explore systematically, Browse states walks state, district, office.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find the PIN code of my area?

Use the "By place name" tab above: pick your state, type your area or post office name (at least 3 letters) and the matching offices appear with their PIN codes. If you already know a nearby PIN, the "By PIN code" tab lists every post office under it.

What do the 6 digits of a PIN code mean?

The first digit is the postal region (1-8 for geographic regions, 9 for Army Post), the first two together identify the postal circle (usually a state), the third the sorting district, and the last three the specific delivery post office. For example, in 110001: 1 is the northern region, 11 is Delhi, 110 the sorting district and 001 the office.

What is the difference between HO, SO and BO post offices?

HO is a Head Office (the main office of a postal division), SO a Sub Office (typically town and city branches) and BO a Branch Office (small, usually village offices with limited services run under a sub office). All three appear in the results with a type badge.

What does delivery vs non-delivery mean?

A delivery office delivers mail to addresses in its area. A non-delivery office only accepts and processes mail (counters, sorting); delivery for its area is handled by another office. Use a delivery office PIN for your postal address.

How many PIN codes are there in India?

This directory contains 19,097 active PIN codes covering 1,54,761 post offices across 36 states and union territories, from the official Department of Posts directory.
